The Valerie Center
is a special outpatient unit designed to handle the needs of children and
young adolescents who are struggling with cancer. The patient checks in
at the reception desk and immediately heads toward the play areas. The
parents have the option to wait in this room or they can accompany their
child. The colors selected are all soft pastels. The multicolored
floor designs and additional details, such as animals drawn on the upholstery, dispel
a clinical feeling. |

Several
play rooms are
divided from each other by glass windows with elaborate pedimented
frames whose column capitals are composed of fish. Fish have
become the theme and they are used in custom painted over door
panels and wall borders, as well as actually swimming in numerous
fish tanks. This wit and innovation of the decoration immediately sets
both parents and children at ease. |

All of the treatment
areas are open and children are allowed to move around at will. This
photo depicts the nurse station that monitors the chemotherapy cubicles.
The work area, refrigerator, icemaker and all supplies are concealed in
millwork towers that are ornamented with diamonds to match the floor
patterns. |
