This Cancer Center for Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston,N.J. was designed to have a corporate environment, not a clinical one. The patient is welcomed to the space and asked to wait in a room where the chairs are upholstered in floral fabrics. The space is lit with table lamps, wall sconces and pendant fixtures. So often comfort and design are sacrificed in the name of function. Not here at the Cancer Center. All of the chemotherapy rooms are private and have a simple elegance. The comfortable recliner/treatment chair is surrounded by guest chairs, reading lamps and a built in entertainment center. Patients are encouraged to bring their friends, favorite movies, CD's, books and lap top computers. | |

Nowhere is the corporate image so apparent as in the corridors which are detailed in cherry paneling with beamed ceilings and artificial skylights. Inset frosted glass panels allow natural light to filter thru. The corridor leads the patient to chemotherapy rooms, exam rooms, doctors offices, laboratories and conference rooms. |
